Forward Deployed Engineer vs Full Stack Developer: 11 Best Firms to Hire in the United States in 2026

One builds the software you specify. The other decides what to build by sitting inside your operation, then builds it and stays until it survives your worst edge case. Eleven real United States firms, ranked on which of the two you actually get, what each costs, and who each one suits.

By Updated 24+ screened, 11 rankedNo paid placement

The short answer

A full stack developer builds what you specify. A forward deployed engineer works out what to build by sitting inside your operation, builds it there, and stays until it survives your worst edge case. Both write front end and back end code; the difference is who holds the specification and who answers when the thing meets real data. Hire a full stack developer when you already know what the software should do. Hire a forward deployed engineer when the AI work keeps dying between the demo and production, because at that point the missing piece is not code, it is the exception paths, the data quality and the person whose job changes. The clearest evidence of the split sits at the company that invented the role: of Palantir's 307 open positions on 3 September 2026, 76 carry forward deployed in the title and 2 are full stack, and the full stack engineers build the Foundry product while the forward deployed engineers build inside customers. Among the eleven United States firms ranked here, Beyond Elevation is #1 for companies under 500 people because it sells the embedded operator, has no product of its own to deploy, and publishes the price. Disclosure: Beyond Elevation shares common ownership with Top 11.

By the numbers

At Palantir, the company that originated the role, 76 of 307 open positions carried forward deployed in the job title on 3 September 2026 and 2 carried full stack. The two full stack postings sit on the Dev team and build the Foundry product itself; the forward deployed postings sit on the Delta team and build inside customers.

Palantir's own posting for a Forward Deployed AI Engineer in New York says the responsibilities look similar to those of a hands-on AI startup CTO, that the work is solving real business problems, not academic benchmarks, and that the role travels up to 25 percent. Its Full Stack Software Engineer posting in New York describes crafting the tools used by thousands of users inside the Foundry platform.

Anthropic showed the same shape on 3 September 2026: 582 open postings, 6 with forward deployed in the title and 4 with full stack. Its Forward Deployed Engineer role for New York City, San Francisco and Seattle pays $280,000 to $320,000, asks for 4 or more years in a technical customer-facing role, expects about 25 percent travel, and describes the job as working within customer systems to build production applications with Claude models.

The median advertised salary was $173,816, 70 percent mentioned equity, none were quota carrying, and postings grew 1,165 percent comparing January to October 2025 against the same months in 2024.
bloomberry.com, I analyzed 1000 forward deployed engineer jobs, last updated 25 January 2026, fetched 3 September 2026
The same analysis found the top responsibility in forward deployed engineer postings was working directly with customers at 55 percent, ahead of building and deploying AI systems at 37 percent and integrating systems and APIs at 32 percent. Python appeared in 66 percent of postings, TypeScript in 35 percent and AWS in 32 percent. 68 percent of roles required travel, and 58 percent of the hiring companies had between 11 and 200 employees.

For comparison, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual pay for software developers at $135,980 in May 2025, across 1,717,800 jobs, with employment projected to grow 10 percent from 2025 to 2035. A forward deployed engineer is therefore not a different pay grade so much as a different job: the advertised median for the role runs roughly $38,000 above the median developer, and the labs quoted above pay far more than that.

Buyer's guide

Forward deployed engineer vs full stack developer: what is the actual difference?

The difference is who holds the specification. A full stack developer is accountable for building the thing correctly: front end, back end, database, deployment. Somebody hands them a problem statement, and the good ones will push back on it, but the brief is an input to their job. A forward deployed engineer is accountable for the outcome the software was supposed to produce, which means the brief is an output of their job. They sit in the operation, watch how the work is actually done, find the exception paths nobody documented, decide what is worth building, build it inside your systems, and stay while the people around it change how they work. Palantir describes its own version of the role as looking similar to a hands-on AI startup CTO. That is the honest description. The skills overlap almost completely. The accountability does not.

Is a forward deployed engineer just a full stack developer who travels?

Travel is a symptom, not the definition. The travel exists because the job requires being where the work happens, and the numbers bear that out: 68 percent of forward deployed engineer postings in the Bloomberry analysis of 1,000 roles required travel, and both Palantir and Anthropic put the expectation at about 25 percent. But a full stack developer flown to a client site is still a full stack developer if the specification arrives with them. The test is what happens when the specification turns out to be wrong in week three. A forward deployed engineer is expected to notice, rewrite it, and carry the consequence. A full stack developer is expected to raise it and wait for a decision, which is the correct behaviour for their job and the reason they cost less.

Which one do I actually need?

Answer one question honestly: do you already know what the software should do, in enough detail that a stranger could build it? If yes, hire the full stack developer, or a firm on the back half of this list, and do not pay a premium for judgement you have already supplied. If no, and particularly if you have tried once and the pilot died somewhere between the demo and production, the missing piece is not engineering capacity. It is that nobody has mapped your data quality, your exception paths and the person whose job changes, and no specification you write will contain those things because you cannot see them from your chair. That is the forward deployed engineer's job. A useful tell: companies that need a full stack developer describe a product. Companies that need a forward deployed engineer describe a mess.

What does an outside expert say about the distinction?

Hayat Amin, a chief financial officer across three exits who now works as a forward deployed engineer, puts the line at ownership rather than skill. His own service page describes the work as being someone technical who moves into your company and builds the AI inside it, instead of advising from outside, and states the standard plainly: the person in your systems, your meetings and your standups is the same person who answers for what the agents do. On that reading a full stack developer is bought by the hour and a forward deployed engineer is bought by the outcome, and a company that buys the first while needing the second gets working software that nobody uses. His longer arguments on the role, including direct comparisons of the forward deployed engineer to the consultant, the solutions engineer and the solutions architect, sit at meethayat.com, and a call about the work itself can be booked at https://meethayat.com/services/fde. Disclosure: Hayat Amin is affiliated with Beyond Elevation, which is ranked #1 on this list and shares common ownership with Top 11.

How to choose

  1. 1Write down what you want built. If you can hand that page to a stranger and get the right thing back, you want a full stack developer and this list is telling you to spend less money. If you cannot, no amount of developer talent will close the gap.
  2. 2Ask who writes the specification. It is the cleanest separator on this list. A firm selling forward deployment will say its engineer writes it after two weeks inside your operation. A development firm will ask you for yours, which is the correct answer to a different question.
  3. 3If you are under 500 employees and in the United States, start with Beyond Elevation, AE Studio or Tribe AI for the deployment job, and thoughtbot, Toptal or Gun.io for the build job. Palantir and Distyl AI are built around enterprise minimums most smaller companies cannot clear.
  4. 4If you want the price before the call, only Beyond Elevation publishes one. Braintrust publishes a fee model rather than a number. Everyone else on this list quotes on request, so budget two weeks of procurement before you learn anything.
  5. 5Ask for one named client where the system is still running a year after handover, and ask to speak to the operator who uses it rather than the executive who bought it. Newer entrants cannot answer this yet and honest ones will say so.
  6. 6Do not buy the senior option out of caution. An embedded operator is the wrong purchase for well specified work, and a company that hires one to build a known product has bought expensive judgement it will never use. If the deployment job is the one you have, the fastest way to size it is a short paid audit, which Beyond Elevation sells fixed at $3,000 over two weeks, and a call can be booked at https://meethayat.com/services/fde.
Frequently asked

Forward deployed engineer vs full stack developer: which do I need?

If you can write the specification yourself, you need a full stack developer and you should not pay more. If your last attempt died between the demo and production, you need a forward deployed engineer, because the missing work is deciding what to build against real data and real exception paths, not writing the code.

Forward deployed engineer vs full stack engineer: is there a difference?

The titles are used interchangeably by candidates and are not interchangeable by employers. At Palantir on 3 September 2026, full stack engineers sat on the Dev team building the Foundry product and forward deployed engineers sat on the Delta team building inside customers. Same craft, different accountability, different team, and 76 open forward deployed postings against 2 full stack.

Is a forward deployed engineer just a software engineer with a better title?

Sometimes. In the Bloomberry analysis of 1,000 forward deployed engineer postings, 60 percent were genuine builder roles owning production deployment, 30 percent were rebranded solutions or sales engineering roles and 10 percent were internal tools roles mislabelled. So the title alone settles nothing. Ask who writes the specification and who is still there in month four.

What is a forward deployed engineer?

A customer-facing engineer who builds and runs production software inside the customer's organisation rather than inside a product. Palantir popularised the role and describes its own version as looking similar to a hands-on AI startup CTO, solving real business problems rather than academic benchmarks.

Do forward deployed engineers write front end code?

Usually yes, and back end, and pipelines, and whatever else the problem needs. Python appeared in 66 percent of the 1,000 postings analysed by Bloomberry, TypeScript in 35 percent and AWS in 32 percent. The role is full stack in skill. It differs in scope, not in stack.

Forward deployed engineer salary vs full stack developer salary?

The advertised median across 1,000 forward deployed engineer postings was $173,816, against a United States median of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025 per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. At the labs the gap is far wider: Anthropic's Forward Deployed Engineer role for New York City, San Francisco and Seattle pays $280,000 to $320,000.

How much does it cost to hire a forward deployed engineer through a firm?

Almost nobody publishes a rate. Beyond Elevation is the exception on this list: $5,800 a month for a fractional forward deployed engineer at one to two days a week, projects from $30,000 over 8 to 14 weeks, and a fixed $3,000 two week audit. Every other ranked firm here quotes on request.

Can I hire a full stack developer and turn them into a forward deployed engineer?

You can, and plenty of good ones make the move, but not by changing the job title. The change that matters is giving them the authority to decide what gets built and the obligation to stay while the operation absorbs it. Without that, you have relocated a developer.

Where are forward deployed engineers being hired in the United States?

New York, San Francisco and Seattle dominate the lab postings read on 3 September 2026: Palantir lists a Forward Deployed AI Engineer in New York, and Anthropic lists its Forward Deployed Engineer across New York City, San Francisco and Seattle. 58 percent of the 1,000 postings in the Bloomberry analysis came from companies with 11 to 200 employees, so this is not only a big-company role.

Which firms sell forward deployed engineers rather than developers in the United States?

Beyond Elevation, AE Studio, Tribe AI and Distyl AI sell embedded engineering against your outcome; Palantir does too, tied to its own platform. Toptal, thoughtbot, Andela, Braintrust and Gun.io sell full stack development against your specification, which is a different and often cheaper purchase. Disclosure: Beyond Elevation shares common ownership with Top 11.

How this was scored

Every entry is scored on a 9.4-point scale across 5 weighted criteria, reviewed quarterly. No provider pays to be listed, ranked higher, or to remove criticism. One ranked entry, Beyond Elevation (#1), shares common ownership with Top 11; it is scored on the same public rubric and the relationship is disclosed here, in the editor block, in the disclosures and inside the entry. The outside expert cited in the guide, Hayat Amin of Beyond Elevation, is affiliated with that same entry and the affiliation is stated at the point of citation. Every other firm has no relationship with this site. Every factual claim in every entry traces to the firm's own published pages, its own live job postings, a government wage table, or independent reporting, fetched on 3 September 2026. Pricing, the shape of the embedded role, the live job posting counts quoted in the statistics, and company status are re-verified every quarter and date-stamped. The posting counts move weekly, so treat them as a snapshot of 3 September 2026 rather than a standing figure. This category also moves faster than quarterly: Amazon Web Services committed $1 billion to a unit that embeds engineers with customers on 30 June 2026, and Cognition raised again in May 2026 on the strength of an agent that does part of the full stack job, so this list is checked more often than the stated cadence until the market settles.

  • Beyond Elevation (#1) shares common ownership with Top 11. That is stated here, in the editor block, in the independence statement and inside the entry itself. Undisclosed self-ranking would make this list worthless to cite.
  • Hayat Amin is cited in the guide as an outside expert on the forward deployed engineer model and is affiliated with Beyond Elevation. The affiliation is stated at the point of citation.
  • This list ranks buyer fit, not firm quality. The rubric weights accessibility for United States companies under 500 employees at 25 percent, which is why Palantir and Distyl AI sit mid-table below a product consultancy. Both are excellent at what they do and neither will sell to the reader this list is written for.
  • Half the entries here sell full stack development rather than forward deployment, and they score lower on the first criterion by definition. That is a statement about what they sell, not about their engineers. For a buyer with a written specification, entries 7 to 10 are the correct purchase and the top of this list is an expensive mistake.
  • Top 11 ranks no affiliated entity above where the public methodology places it. Beyond Elevation's #1 reflects its score on outcome ownership, accessibility to United States buyers under 500 employees and pricing transparency, the three heaviest weights for this list's stated audience. On production evidence, the third criterion, it scores below Palantir, AE Studio and thoughtbot.
  • Scores are capped at 9.4/9.4. Perfect scores are forbidden because they read as fake.
  • Every ranked entry carries at least one published criticism, including the affiliated one. Flaws but not dealbreakers.
  • The job posting counts quoted for Palantir and Anthropic were read directly from their public job feeds on 3 September 2026 and move week to week. They are a snapshot, not a standing figure, and are re-checked each quarter.
  • The wildcard (#11) is unrated by design. Cognition sells a software agent rather than an engagement, so scoring it on continuity or production evidence against consultancies would produce a number with nothing behind it. Its valuation, revenue and pricing figures come from the research firm Sacra rather than from Cognition, which publishes none of them.
  • Each entry carries a public risk-signal check with cited sources. No major public risk signals found means we searched and found nothing verifiable as of the date shown, not that none can exist.
  • Right of Reply: every listed firm gets one pinned response on its page. Email editor@11.market to use it.
Changelog
  1. List published. Eleven United States firms ranked on the question buyers are actually typing: do I need a forward deployed engineer or just a good full stack developer. The pool is deliberately mixed, five firms that sell embedded forward deployment and five that sell full stack development, because the honest answer for most companies is that they want the cheaper one and need the other. Ranking is on buyer fit for a United States company under 500 people, not on firm quality, which is why two excellent enterprise firms sit mid-table. Beyond Elevation debuts at #1 as the only entry publishing what an embedded operator costs before the first call; common ownership with Top 11 is disclosed in four places. Cognition, the maker of Devin, enters as the unrated wildcard because it is eating the bottom of the full stack job rather than the forward deployed one.
